Street Photography Workshop

Yesterday I attended a street photography workshop, hosted by former Amateur Photographer editor Damien Demolder (in association with Jessops and Panasonic). Damien spoke for some time about his street photography, showing some cracking examples, and encouraged us to take more than just candid snaps - look at the interchange between light and shadow and how and where the light falls onto people. There are some great examples on his website. He's a very good engaging speaker and obviously knows what he's on about. We then picked out the Panasonic hardware we wanted to try out (I used a GX-8, which seemed a pretty good piece of kit, with a 25mm lens - equivalent to 50mm in 35mm terms) and headed out for a tutorial about how to use the light. What was fascinating was how his recommendation to crank the camera down to about -3/-4 stops of exposure compensation really worked - changing the photos from a plain bright representation of the scene into...

Josie portraits

I was quite flattered to be contacted by a model last week, looking to collaborate with me to help develop her portfolio - we headed out to an abandoned church at Tintern, and the lampshades had another outing (it's one of the things that caught her eye in my portfolio!). I'm pretty pleased with the results, especially the black and white one....

Weston-super-Mare

Despite having lived in Bristol for almost 20 years, I think I've only been to Weston once before. Last week I got together with a couple of old photography friends (we met on a course at the Watershed back in about 2001) and went down to Weston for the day to catch up and take a few photos. A nice mix of shots of the seaside thing, the pier and people....

Portraits

I've slowly been getting back into a bit of photography after a very quiet winter, and have been doing more people work - these are three sets of portraits I've done over the last month or so with Hannah, Rose and April respectively. I'm particularly pleased with the third set - I had an idea based on a shot by photographer Polly Penrose so turned up with a couple of lampshades (as you do) and I'm really pleased with the results - a bit quirky! I also wanted to try some portraits in the high-key style you might associate with Dazed and Confused or ID magazine (in my mind anyway), and these went really well too....

Bristol Naked Bike Ride 2015 (NSFW)

Saturday was the Bristol leg of the World Naked Bike Ride, the 4th time I've taken part in it. This was the biggest and best so far, apparently something like 450 riders (up from 120 last year) - there are new organisers and they've done a great job on publicity for it. It being a lovely warm sunny day also helped. Obviously, the photos are somewhat unsuitable for viewing at work! " order_by="sortorder"]...
