Clevedon Marine Lake, September 2020

The photos here are from two separate visits to photograph the seawater swimming lake in Clevedon, just a few days apart. I wasn't happy with the results from the first visit, so actually went back and had another go. We visited the lake last summer (see Clevedon & Portishead, June 2019), when I realised that it would be perfect for some long exposures - so having some time off work in September, I decided to give it a go. I specifically avoided a sunny day, as that wouldn't work so well. One other thing I had to do was make sure that the swimmers knew I wasn't taking photos of them - it's a public space so you can just pitch up and take photos. I made it clear to everyone that I wasn't photographing them and was using long exposures - it actually made for a few conversations as people were interested in the film cameras and the technique. The first set...

France 2017

We went back to France for our summery holiday, after a slight aberration last year when we spent a few days in a caravan in Cornwall - any mention of that holiday now gets us both whistling the theme tune to Peter Kaye's Phoenix Nights, given the quality of the evening entertainment the caravan park laid on... We went back to a gite we've been to a couple of times before - it's nice, it's a good size for the two of us, it's quiet, it's very close to the local wine producer and it's got very clear views of the night sky. So here's a few different sets: Giverny On the way down through France, we stopped off at Giverny to visit the Monet gardens - we'd been a couple of times about 15 years ago now and thought it time for another visit. The last image is a little different - not taken at Giverny but fairly close by. Slightly inspired by the...

Cornwall 2016

We spent a week in Cornwall (or more specifically The Lizard), ambling around various villages and coves. Kynance Cove was as glorious as ever - I think this was the third time I've been there and there have been spectacular waves every time. A lovely place. Porthcurno and the Minack Theatre are favourites too. Mullion Cove was new to us, as was Coverack where a chance spot of a notice in a shop window led us to the Terence Coventry Sculpture Garden - chock full of really interesting modern sculpture....

Aust

On the way back from Tintern, I fancied trying to get some decent photos of one or other of the Severn Bridges. I ended up parked just near the old ferry at Aust - and what a fantastic location is it! Distant views of the second Severn Bridge over grassy fields, the old ramps for the ferry, the big electricity pylon and the first bridge - superb. Somewhere to return to with the large format camera when it arrives. The pylon with flat light could be Bernd & Hilla Becher-esque....
